Unveiling the Dark Side of Online Content Moderation: A Deep Dive into Faces of Death

Filmmaker Daniel Goldhaber drew inspiration from his experience as a content moderator for a social media startup in his early 20s to reimagine the '70s shockumentary Faces of Death. In the reboot, a content moderator working for a TikTok-like company becomes fixated on a mysterious user posting gory videos inspired by the original film, leading her to question the authenticity of the violent content she views. The idea for the movie stemmed from Goldhaber's past job, shaping the film's world and approach to the impact of graphic images.

Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights to Faces of Death in 2021 and enlisted Goldhaber and co-writer Isa Mazzei to develop the script. Drawing from their upbringing in the digital age, the duo aimed to adapt the seemingly unadaptable movie by reflecting on their online experiences. The protagonist Margot, played by Barbie Ferreira, spends her days as a content moderator watching disturbing clips and navigating the ethical dilemmas of content removal.

While the film simplifies the content moderation process, it portrays Margot's quest to uncover the identity of the video creator through Reddit investigations realistically. Mazzei crafted authentic Reddit posts to enhance the film's portrayal of the internet as a dynamic and immersive space. Ferreira, who delved into the world of content moderation for her role, highlighted the psychological toll of the job and the disconnect between the disturbing content moderators view and the audience's perception.

Ferreira's preparation for the role involved immersing herself in graphic videos to understand Margot's desensitization to violence. The actor's exposure to such content took a toll on her mental well-being, requiring a significant recovery period post-filming. Despite the challenges, Ferreira's commitment to portraying the character's emotional journey adds depth to Margot's internal struggles in Faces of Death.

Faces of Death, set to premiere in theaters on April 10, delves into the dark side of online content moderation and the psychological impact of exposure to graphic material. Through the lens of a content moderator's obsession with a mysterious user, the film explores themes of desensitization, ethical boundaries, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction in the digital age.
