Remembering Bob Hall: Boston Marathon Wheelchair Champion and Trailblazer

The Boston Athletic Association recently announced the passing of Bob Hall, the first-ever Boston Marathon wheelchair champion and the 2025 marathon grand marshal. Hall, a native of Belmont, Massachusetts, made history in 1975 by becoming the first officially recognized wheelchair athlete to compete in the Boston Marathon. He completed the race in under three hours, marking the beginning of the wheelchair division in the event. Throughout his career, Hall participated in multiple Boston Marathons, achieving third place finishes in 1978, 1980, and 1981.

In addition to his racing accomplishments, Hall was a trailblazer in wheelchair racing technology, founding a company called Hall’s Wheels. He also dedicated his time to mentoring aspiring racers, such as Bob Nichol and Jason Fowler, who went on to achieve success in their own racing careers. The Boston Athletic Association expressed their gratitude for the moments shared with Hall, highlighting his impact on promoting competitive opportunities for athletes of all abilities in Boston.

Hall's passing comes just days before the 130th Boston Marathon, scheduled for April 20. His legacy as a pioneer in wheelchair racing and his contributions to the sport will be remembered by his friends, family, and the entire wheelchair racing community.
