Enhancing Literacy: Louisiana's New English Language Arts Standards for Students

Louisiana students are set to benefit from new English language arts standards that focus on reading and writing fundamentals, according to state education officials. These standards, developed by Louisiana educators through a public review process led by the Louisiana Department of Education, emphasize the science of reading, grammar, cursive writing, and content-rich text. The goal is to strengthen students' skills in grammar, usage, and writing, enabling them to effectively communicate in academic and professional settings.

The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved the revised K-12 standards, following a recommendation by State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. Brumley highlighted that the new standards reflect a return to timeless academic practices and address the feedback received from parents and teachers who advocate for more focus on core skills. The standards review is part of Louisiana's regular cycle, requiring K-12 content standards to be reviewed at least once every seven years.

The updated standards are scheduled to be implemented in the 2027-2028 school year. The Louisiana Department of Education will provide support to school systems by offering training, guidance, and instructional resources to ensure a smooth transition to the new standards. This initiative aims to equip Louisiana students with essential reading and writing skills that will benefit them in their academic and professional pursuits.
