Cheech Marin Partners with Jimmy John’s for 4/20 'Dream Rotation' Campaign
As the annual celebration of 4/20 approaches, Cheech Marin is once again embracing his status as a cannabis cultural icon. Partnering with Jimmy John’s for their new “Dream Rotation” campaign, the comedy legend shares his go-to food lineup for satisfying the munchies. The campaign features a limited-time menu called the “Dream Rotation Meal,” which includes a toasted sandwich, chips, and a new Cereal n’ Milk Crispy Treat. Marin stars in a digital spot alongside Amanda Batula, Skyler Gisondo, and Kal Penn, each revealing their preferred order for the occasion.
The phenomenon of experiencing the munchies after using cannabis is attributed to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which stimulates brain receptors that increase appetite, enhance the taste and smell of food, and trigger dopamine release. This leads to the craving for salty, sweet, or indulgent snacks post-cannabis consumption. Marin’s involvement in the campaign goes beyond a mere celebrity endorsement, as he has long been a prominent figure in cannabis culture.
The significance of 4/20, often referred to as the ‘high holy holiday,’ has evolved from its origins as an underground ritual. The term originated in 1971 when a group of California high school students known as “the Waldos” used “4:20” as a code for their after-school gatherings. The slang gained popularity within the Grateful Dead’s community before becoming a global symbol for cannabis in the 1990s, largely due to High Times magazine.
For Marin, 4/20 holds a special place as he, alongside Tommy Chong, played a pivotal role in popularizing cannabis culture through films like Up in Smoke and Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie. Their influence has extended into the business realm, with their cannabis and hemp ventures estimated to be valued at over $150 million. Their companies now offer THC-infused beverages, gummies, and other hemp-derived products nationwide, with projected revenue expected to reach nearly $100 million by 2025.
