Hammond School Incident: Teenager Apprehended After Gunshots Outside Tangipahoa Alternative Programs

A 13-year-old boy was apprehended by authorities in Hammond after an incident outside Tangipahoa Alternative Programs resulted in critical injuries to an adult on Tuesday. The Hammond Police school resource officer was alerted that the teenager was reluctant to leave a vehicle and enter the school at 7:39 a.m. Following a conversation with the teen and an accompanying adult, they decided to take the boy home. However, as they were leaving, gunshots were heard, and the teen was seen approaching the officer with a gun. Subsequently, the teen was taken into custody, while the adult was hospitalized with severe injuries. The school was put on lockdown as a precautionary measure and remained so as of 10:05 a.m.

Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron Jr. expressed his dismay at the senseless violence that occurred, emphasizing the importance of school resource officers in such situations. He commended the SRO for intervening promptly and preventing further harm.
