In Memory of David Parrish: A Tribute to an Ultra-Marathon Champion and Fundraiser for Scottish Mountain Rescue

A tragic incident occurred in the Highlands as 35-year-old ultra-marathon champion David Parrish passed away while attempting to break the record for the fastest completion of the Cape Wrath trail. His body was discovered in the remote mountainous region of Kintail in the north-west Highlands. The police confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and his family has been informed.
David Parrish, a former Royal Marine, was an accomplished ultra-marathon runner who had previously won the Cape Wrath Trail race in 2023. The Cape Wrath Trail, spanning Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross, and Torridon, is renowned as one of the most challenging routes in the UK. Parrish was undertaking this latest challenge to raise funds for Scottish Mountain Rescue in memory of his friend Luke Ireland, a Royal Marine who tragically lost his life while running in the mountains of Glen Cova in Angus in 2014.
Parrish's dedication to fundraising for Scottish Mountain Rescue was evident in his efforts to support the volunteers who tirelessly respond to emergencies in Scotland's mountainous and remote areas. His fundraising page has garnered significant contributions, with many individuals paying tribute to his remarkable spirit and commitment to the cause. As a member of the Dumfries Running Club, Parrish had established himself as a prominent figure in the local running community, showcasing his passion for the sport and his desire to push his limits.
Throughout his running journey, Parrish had demonstrated resilience and determination, starting in his late teens and gradually progressing to competitive races in his early 20s. His involvement in the marines further fueled his love for running, providing him with a means of unwinding from the challenges of his military service. Following his departure from the marines, Parrish continued to pursue his passion for running, participating in Parkruns and even completing the Cape Wrath Trail on foot in 2021.
The loss of David Parrish has deeply impacted the running community and those who knew him personally. No Limits Photography, the company that captured his participation in the 2023 Cape Wrath event, paid tribute to his infectious joy and inspirational presence as an ultra-marathon athlete. Parrish's legacy as a dedicated runner and fundraiser for Scottish Mountain Rescue will be remembered by all who were touched by his remarkable spirit and unwavering commitment to supporting a noble cause.
