Trader Joe’s Class Action Settlement: Compensation for Customers Whose Card Numbers Were Exposed in 2019

Trader Joe’s customers who made purchases with credit or debit cards in 2019 may be entitled to compensation as part of a class action settlement. The grocery chain has agreed to pay $7.4 million to customers whose receipts displayed 10 digits of their card numbers in 2019. To qualify, customers must have made purchases at Trader Joe’s using a credit or debit card between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, with the first six and last four digits of the card printed on the receipt.

The plaintiff, Brian Keim, filed a complaint alleging that a Trader Joe’s store in Florida printed a receipt with the first six and last four digits of his debit card, potentially exposing him to identity theft. Keim claims that this violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, which limits the display of card numbers on receipts. The estimated payout per customer is $102.45, subject to the total number of valid claims submitted.

Checks will be issued within 10 business days of final approval, and customers have 180 days to cash them. Trader Joe’s, while agreeing to the settlement, disputes the claims against it and denies any link between the receipts and identity theft. Eligible customers can file a claim on the settlement website until June 9 or submit Claim Forms by phone or mail.

For further information or inquiries, customers can visit the settlement website or contact the provided email or phone number. The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for August 10.
