AI-Enabled Fraud Scheme Uncovered in Greater Toronto Area: Seven Arrested in Retail Theft Investigation
A recent fraud investigation in the Greater Toronto Area has led to the arrest of seven individuals who allegedly used AI-enabled tools to target retail locations. The suspects reportedly employed smart glasses, cellphones, and distraction techniques to steal login information from store employees, which was then used to load funds onto gift cards through self-checkout kiosks. The Toronto Police Service's major fraud division launched an investigation after a complaint from a national retailer's security arm, identifying 112 suspicious incidents linked to the scheme, resulting in significant financial losses for the affected stores. Five individuals from Toronto have been charged with fraud-related offenses, while two suspects remain at large with Canada-wide warrants.
