Renowned country music songwriter Don Schlitz has passed away at the age of 73 after a sudden illness. Born in Durham, N.C., he moved to Nashville at 20 with just $80 in his pocket. Schlitz quickly gained recognition in the music industry, with his first recorded song, "The Gambler," becoming a massive hit for Kenny Rogers in 1978. This success led to a prolific career, writing numerous chart-topping songs for artists like Randy Travis, the Judds, and Tanya Tucker. Schlitz's contributions to country music earned him multiple awards and inductions into prestigious halls of fame, including the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2017.
