A new collection of previously unreleased live music from Frank Zappa in 1966 is set to be released in May. Zappa '66: Vol. 1 – Live at TTG Studios will be available on May 15 under the Vaulternative Records imprint, which focuses on rare live recordings and deep cuts from Zappa's extensive archive. This album will feature 17 recordings, 16 of which have never been released before, capturing a session from October 1966, between the releases of Freak Out! and Absolutely Free. The tracks were recorded during a television special called Sex in Today's World, showcasing the Los Angeles and rock scenes of the era. The upcoming album will be released on translucent red vinyl, CD, and digital platforms, offering fans a unique glimpse into Zappa's early live performances.
The recordings from Zappa '66: Vol. 1 – Live at TTG Studios include the only known recording of guitarist Del Casher with the Mothers of Invention, as well as the earliest appearances of percussionist Billy Mundi and keyboardist Don Preston in the band. The performance at TTG Studios was captured on Zappa's reel-to-reel tape machine, marking the first release of most of the material from that day. The album also features original Freak Out! band members Ray Collins, Roy Estrada, and Jimmy Carl Black. Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers, who curated the album, emphasized the diversity of content in the release, reflecting Zappa's philosophy of Anything Anytime Anyplace for No Reason at All. The album aims to provide fans with a deeper look into Zappa's creative process and live performances during this pivotal period in his career.
