Unraveling the Story Behind Johnny Cash's Iconic Song 'Understand Your Man

Johnny Cash's iconic song "Understand Your Man" topped the country singles charts on April 18, 1964, from his album "I Walk the Line". The song spent six weeks at the top of the country charts and also reached No. 35 on the Top 40. Interestingly, the melody of the song is identical to Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right".

According to Cindy Cash, Johnny Cash's daughter, he sought permission from Bob Dylan to use the melody for "Understand Your Man" after struggling to come up with one himself. Dylan nonchalantly replied, "I don't give a s—." This casual response may have been influenced by the fact that Dylan himself borrowed the melody for his song from a traditional folk tune.

"Understand Your Man" holds a special place in Johnny Cash's live performances as it was the final song he performed at the Carter Family Fold in Virginia on July 5, 2003. Despite his frail health, Cash delighted the audience with his rendition of the song, marking his last public performance before his passing on September 12, 2003, at the age of 71.
