Exploring the Possibility of a Coach's Challenge System in EFL Matches: A Step Towards VAR Adoption

EFL clubs have recently discussed the possibility of implementing a "coach's challenge" system in their matches, as part of a move towards adopting VAR technology. The Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) presented this idea to the Football Video Support (FVS) during a meeting with clubs. The Championship teams have expressed their interest in having video technology to differentiate themselves from the Premier League, where VAR has faced significant criticism from fans. The FVS system would allow managers to make two challenges per match, with decisions being reviewed by officials using video technology.
This system, similar to a scaled-down version of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, is currently being tested in countries like Italy, Malta, and Spain. In tennis, players have long been able to challenge decisions and retain their appeals if successful, but lose them if unsuccessful. While goal-line technology is already in use in the Championship and may be introduced in League One next season, the EFL seems hesitant to embrace further technological advancements at this time.
The International FA Board (Ifab) is conducting a two-year review of VAR, and the Football Association is considering implementing a trial scheme. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham believes that the coach's challenge system could change the dynamic of the game by reducing the frequency of VAR interventions and placing more responsibility on the coaches. While some parts of the game may not be ready for VAR yet, exploring different models could be beneficial for the future.
In a separate development, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's proposal for a daylight offside rule was tested for the first time in Canada last weekend. Pacific FC striker Alejandro Diaz scored the first goal allowed under this new rule in the Canadian Premier League. Wenger, now Fifa's chief of global football development, has advocated for this rule change to give attackers an advantage.
