Michigan's focus on industrial decarbonization and the development of a greenhouse gas dashboard were highlighted as key steps in the state's climate action plan. Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the MI Healthy Climate Challenge to support manufacturers in reducing carbon emissions. The state is also conducting an environmental vulnerability assessment to address climate change impacts, including the spread of diseases like Lyme disease and blastomyces fungus.
Jalonne White-Newsome, an environmental justice advocate, emphasized the importance of inclusive climate solutions that prioritize marginalized communities. She urged stakeholders to engage in "sports mode" advocacy, accelerating efforts towards environmental justice. White-Newsome stressed the need for accountability, community engagement, and adherence to environmental justice principles in climate action initiatives. The shared vision of a healthy and sustainable Michigan must encompass environmental justice for all, driving a collective commitment to achieving a healthier future for the state.
