Malta Film Festival 2026: Celebrating International Cinema and Collaboration
The Mediterrane Film Festival is gearing up for its fourth edition, scheduled to take place from June 21–28 in Valletta and various iconic locations in Malta. Organized by the Malta Film Commission, this year's festival promises to be bigger and better, with an expanded lineup of screenings, industry events, and cultural activities aimed at solidifying Malta's position as a global filmmaking hub. The 2026 edition will feature five program strands, including the Big Screen Competition, Mediterranean Competition, Mare Nostrum, Best of the World, and Malta Focus, each showcasing different aspects of international and regional cinema. Screenings will be held at the Embassy Cinema in Valletta, as well as outdoor venues like Upper Barrakka Gardens and Fort Ricasoli Counterguard, with filmmaker Q&As for select films.
The festival's theme for this year, "Beyond Together," highlights the importance of collaboration and cross-cultural exchange, reflecting Malta's role as a bridge between creative industries and international talent. An industry-focused segment will also be part of the festival, offering panels and masterclasses with industry experts. Past editions have featured renowned speakers such as Mike Leigh, Yorgos Mavropsaridis, Nathan Crowley, Rick Carter, Catherine Hardwicke, and Margery Simkin. The festival will conclude with the prestigious Golden Bee Awards, recognizing excellence in various competition categories and honoring emerging and established talent. The jury members and full program details will be revealed in May.
The 2025 festival attracted over 11,400 attendees and garnered significant global media coverage. All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Maltese cancer charity Puttinu Cares.
