Clueless Sequel Series Starring Alicia Silverstone Canceled at Peacock: What's Next for the Beloved IP?

Alicia Silverstone will not be reprising her role as Cher Horowitz in the planned "Clueless" sequel series at Peacock. The project, which was announced in April 2025, is no longer moving forward at the NBCU streamer. Despite this setback, CBS Studios and Paramount are still enthusiastic about the project and the beloved IP, anticipating strong interest from potential buyers in the future.

The exact plot details of the sequel series were not disclosed, but it was set to follow Cher's life years after the events of the original film. The writing team for the series included Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss, with Schwartz and Savage also serving as executive producers under their Fake Empire banner. Alicia Silverstone was set to star in and executive produce the series, alongside original film writer and director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence.

Peacock had previously worked on a different "Clueless" project in 2020 centered around Cher's best friend Dionne, but that project did not progress beyond the development stage. The original "Clueless" film, released in 1995, was a modern adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma" and featured a star-studded cast including Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and more. The film's success led to a TV adaptation that aired for three seasons from 1996 to 1999.

Peacock's current lineup of scripted shows includes returning favorites like "Twisted Metal," "The Paper," and "The 'Burbs," as well as upcoming dramas and comedies. Despite the setback with the "Clueless" sequel series, Peacock continues to develop new and exciting content for its viewers, with a diverse range of shows in the pipeline.
