Funeral Home Owners Sentenced for Improper Body Storage: Carie Hallford Faces 25-35 Years in Prison

The sentencing of one of the owners of a former funeral home in southern Colorado, where almost 200 bodies were found improperly stored in 2023, is set to take place on state charges. Carie Hallford, a co-owner of Return to Nature, faces a potential 25 to 35-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to abuse of a corpse in a plea deal accepted by an El Paso County judge in December 2025. Her federal sentence of 18 years will run concurrently with the state sentence. Meanwhile, Jon Hallford, the other owner, received a 40-year state sentence in February, to be served alongside his 20-year federal sentence from last summer.
