Hidden Stories: Stanley Kubrick's Secret Subway Photos from 1946

Stanley Kubrick, a teenager in 1946, took secret photos of strangers on the New York City subway, hidden under his coat. These 18 vintage prints were recently discovered in a four-million-photograph archive acquired by gallery owner Daniel Miller. Kubrick, at just 16 or 17, was working for Look Magazine as their youngest photographer. The mystery behind the images and the storytelling aspect of Kubrick's work make these early photos intriguing. The photos capture a bygone era when riding the subway was a more formal and social experience. The exhibit featuring these photos is on display at The Photography Show at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, but they have already been purchased by an undisclosed entertainment figure and will soon be out of public view.
