Ruyi Film Entertainment: Transforming Cinema into Diverse Entertainment Complexes

China's Wanda Film has rebranded itself as Ruyi Film Entertainment while keeping the well-known Wanda cinema brand intact. The name change was officially announced on April 19 and has been reflected on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, where Wanda Film has been listed since 2015. The ownership transition occurred in 2024 when Ke Liming from China Ruyi Holdings became the majority stakeholder. Ruyi is associated with Tencent, a technology company famous for its messaging app WeChat.

Wanda Film's parent company, Dalian Wanda Group, was established by Wang Jianlin and primarily focuses on real estate. The group began divesting its assets during China's deleveraging campaign, including its stake in US cinema chain AMC Theatres in 2021 and Wanda Film. Following the rebranding, Ruyi Film chairperson Chen Zhixi emphasized the importance of staying ahead in a dynamic market and expanding offline entertainment experiences by transforming theaters into diverse entertainment complexes.

According to data shared in the company letter, six Wanda cinemas ranked among the top 10 highest-grossing cinemas nationwide during the recent Chinese New Year period. Pegasus 3, a film co-invested and co-distributed by Wanda Film, emerged as the top-grossing film during this time. With over 700 Wanda cinemas in operation and support for nearly 200 productions in the past two decades, the company is poised for a profitable future. The company letter also projected a return to profitability in 2025, with an estimated net profit range of $70.4m-$80.6m (RMB480m-550m).

In conclusion, the rebranding of Wanda Film to Ruyi Film Entertainment marks a strategic move to adapt to evolving market trends and enhance the entertainment offerings provided by the company. With a strong presence in the cinema industry and a focus on expanding into diversified entertainment experiences, Ruyi Film aims to continue its success and profitability in the coming years.
