Viktor Orban Steps Down: A New Era in Hungarian Politics

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced his decision to step down from Parliament after losing the election to Peter Magyar. In a video message, Orban expressed his intention to lead a reorganization of the national movement and stated that he needed to leave Parliament to fulfill this role. This marks the end of his 36-year tenure in elected office, having served continuously since 1990.
Orban emphasized the unity and cohesion of the political community he has led for nearly four decades, highlighting the importance of maintaining this unity for the benefit of Hungary. He mentioned that the presidium has proposed him to continue as the head of Fidesz, and he is willing to take on this responsibility if honored with the trust of the Congress. Fidesz is set to convene a nationwide meeting next week and conduct an election in June to determine its leadership.
During his 16-year tenure as Prime Minister, Orban transformed Hungary into a conservative stronghold in Europe, diverging from the usual left-leaning trend. However, his defeat in the election came at the hands of the younger and charismatic Magyar, who resigned from Fidesz due to a corruption scandal. Magyar's campaign aligned with many of Orban's positions, surpassing him on the right on issues like immigration.
Orban's loss in the election has implications beyond Hungary, as he was considered a key conservative ally for the Trump administration in Europe. Vice President JD Vance had visited Hungary before the election in an attempt to rally support for Fidesz, but the efforts did not yield the desired outcome.
