Blondie's 'Call Me': A Dance-Rock New Wave Classic That Topped the Charts in 1980

"Call Me" by Blondie is a dance-rock new wave classic that topped the charts 46 years ago in 1980. The song reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US and the UK Singles chart. In the US, it spent six weeks at the top and a total of 25 weeks on the Hot 100. In the UK, it held the number one spot for three weeks.
Originally composed by Giorgio Moroder for the film American Gigolo, "Call Me" almost had a different singer. Moroder initially wanted Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac to record the song. However, due to Nicks' record deal restrictions, he turned to Debbie Harry of Blondie. Harry quickly penned the lyrics for the track, transforming it into the iconic hit we know today.
"Call Me" has since achieved Gold certification in the US and Platinum certification in the UK. It continues to be a beloved song that transcends its origins as a movie theme.
