Indie Music Stores Thrive on Record Store Day 2026: A Retail Track Recap

Record Store Day (RSD 2026) has been a huge success for indie music stores across the United States. Retail Track embarked on its annual RSD store crawl, visiting stores in Brooklyn and Queens, culminating at Rough Trade in Rockefeller Center for the Indie Plaza event. The day started early at Pancakes Records in Astoria, Queens, with eager customers lining up before the store's opening to get their hands on exclusive releases. Retail Track then made a quick stop at Vinyl Veritas in Brooklyn, where despite a delay, customers were excitedly waiting in line for the store to open.

Vinyl Veritas, with two locations in the same building, offered refreshments, discounts, and live DJ sets, making it a memorable RSD experience for customers. The store reported record sales, with the Grateful Dead set being a top-seller. Moving on to 5th Avenue Records in Park Slope, Retail Track found no line outside the store before its scheduled opening time, prompting a visit to Smith's Tavern across the street, which turned out to be closed. Psychic Records, also in Park Slope, had a line forming before its opening, with customers eager to snag RSD releases.

Henry and Peyton were among the early birds at Psychic Records, each with their own list of sought-after RSD titles. The store's owner, Chris Lentz, reported strong sales of Sonic Youth, Springsteen, and Pink Floyd albums, catering to a diverse customer base. Despite some inventory wishes, Lentz expressed satisfaction with the day's turnout. Overall, RSD 2026 proved to be a successful and exciting day for indie record stores, showcasing the enduring appeal of physical music releases and the support of dedicated music enthusiasts.
