AI-Generated Celebrity Scam Ads on TikTok: The Rise of Deepfakes and Fraudulent Practices

Scammers are utilizing AI-generated videos featuring celebrities like Taylor Swift and Rihanna to endorse questionable services on TikTok, as reported by authentication company Copyleaks. These ads often depict celebrities in interview scenarios, such as red carpet events or talk shows, and manipulate authentic footage using AI technology. Many of these ads promote rewards programs that promise users the opportunity to earn money by watching TikTok content and providing feedback. While some of the ads display TikTok's official branding, users are redirected to third-party services that request personal information.

In one instance, a lifelike AI avatar of Taylor Swift encourages viewers to sign up for a service called TikTok Pay. Another ad features a fabricated Rihanna stating, "you literally just watch content and give your opinion." This trend highlights the challenge social platforms face in combating the proliferation of convincing deepfakes, which pose a growing concern for users. TikTok is not the only platform grappling with this issue, as reports indicate that Meta's platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, are inundated with billions of scam ads daily. Meta's oversight board has acknowledged the prevalence of deepfakes on its platforms, and YouTube has emphasized its significant investment in combating celebrity scam ads.

Celebrities are also taking steps to protect themselves from AI copycats. Recently, Taylor Swift filed new trademark applications to safeguard clips of her voice, aiming to prevent unauthorized use of her likeness in deepfake videos. This proactive approach reflects the ongoing battle against fraudulent content and the need for enhanced measures to address the proliferation of deceptive practices online.
