ABC Renews Hit Series Scrubs and Shifting Gears for 2026-27 Season
ABC has officially renewed two series for its 2026-27 schedule. The network has confirmed that both Scrubs and Shifting Gears, produced by 20th Television, will be returning for the upcoming season. Shifting Gears, a multi-camera comedy starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, will be back for its third season. The show was ABC's most-watched comedy in linear ratings this season, averaging 5.4 million viewers with seven days of DVR playback. Including streaming numbers, the show reached about 7 million viewers per episode after a week. The Scrubs revival will also be returning for a second season after premiering to 9 million cross-platform viewers in its first seven days. In Nielsen's 35-day, all-platform ratings, the show grew to 11 million viewers. It was also ABC's top comedy among adults 18-49 in linear ratings this season.
With these renewals, ABC has now secured the return of almost all of its current scripted shows for next season, with only first-year drama R.J. Decker still awaiting a decision. The network has previously ordered new seasons of 911, 911: Nashville, Abbott Elementary, Grey's Anatomy, High Potential, The Rookie, and Will Trent. Tim Allen executive produces Shifting Gears alongside Michelle Nader, Marty Adelstein, and others, while Kat Dennings is also a producer on the show. Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence executive produces the revival with showrunner Aseem Batra, along with lead actors Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke, among others.
