37 Years of Derby Tradition: A Michigan Trio's Journey to the Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby weekend is a popular event that attracts a large crowd to Louisville. For three friends from Michigan, attending the Derby has become a cherished tradition spanning 37 years. Despite the snowy weather during their first visit in 1989, they had such a great time that they kept coming back year after year, exploring different sections and boxes at the event venue.
David Uschwald, one of the friends, shared that he meticulously prepares for the Derby by creating a detailed spreadsheet that tracks the results of prep races. With over 100 years of combined experience among them, the friends analyze the data to make informed bets on the horses. While their betting strategies may not always lead to wins, they enjoy the thrill of the event regardless of the outcome.
Uschwald humorously recalled how he made attending the Derby and a golf outing in September non-negotiable events when proposing to his wife 24 years ago. His wife agreed to his terms, understanding the importance of these annual gatherings to him and his friends. The Kentucky Derby holds a special place in their hearts, and they look forward to continuing their tradition for years to come.
