Empowering Southeast Asian Cinema: The Purin Film Fund Spring 2026 Winners Announced

The Purin Film Fund, a Bangkok-based nonprofit, has announced that six independent film projects from Southeast Asia will receive a total of $160,000 in production and post-production support for its Spring 2026 session. Four projects have been awarded production grants, including two fiction films and two documentaries. "Dear Son An" tells the story of a young boy navigating faith and fantasy as his mother battles cancer, while "Little Phnom Penh" follows a Cambodian woman's search for home and belonging. The two documentary projects, "Sisters in War" and "Once, Here," explore themes of resistance and memory. Additionally, two documentary projects, "Araro Ariraro" and "The People Outside," have received post-production support to bring their stories to life.
The Purin Film Fund received a record number of submissions for this session, highlighting the continued growth of independent cinema in Southeast Asia. With limited funding opportunities available, projects must distinguish themselves to secure support. Co-director Aditya Assarat emphasized the competitiveness of the funding landscape and the need for projects to stand out.
Established in 2017 under the Purin Foundation and led by filmmakers Anocha Suwichakornpong and Aditya Assarat, the Purin Film Fund is dedicated to supporting independent cinema in Southeast Asia through various stages of production, exhibition, and education. The fund's focus on nurturing emerging talent and unique storytelling voices in the region has made it a vital resource for filmmakers. Applications for the Fall 2026 session will open on August 1, providing another opportunity for filmmakers to access support for their projects.
