Tragic Death of Vietnam War Veteran in E-Motorcycle Collision Sparks Legal Action Against Parent
An 81-year-old Vietnam War veteran tragically passed away after being struck by a teenager riding an E-motorcycle in Lake Forest. Ed Ashman, a former Marine Corps captain, was hit while walking home from his job as a substitute teacher at El Toro High School. The collision occurred at Toledo Way and Ridge Route Drive on April 16. The teen rider, identified as the 14-year-old son of Tommi Jo Mejer, left the scene but was later arrested.
Following Ashman's death, charges against Mejer were upgraded to include involuntary manslaughter in addition to felony child endangerment, felony accessory after the fact to a crime, and other related charges. The incident highlighted the dangers of allowing minors to operate E-motorcycles illegally. Mejer faces a maximum sentence of six years in state prison if convicted on all counts.
The Orange County District Attorney emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that parents must be held accountable for allowing their children to engage in dangerous activities that can harm others.
