The new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, draws inspiration from a mix of classic and contemporary films, as revealed by executive producer Matt Michnovetz. Taking place post-The Clone Wars, the show follows Maul as he endeavors to rebuild his criminal empire and encounters a potential new apprentice. Michnovetz mentioned that the series was influenced by movies that shaped George Lucas's vision, such as The Dark Knight, The Godfather, and Heat.

In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, Michnovetz discussed the desire to infuse fresh elements into the Star Wars narrative through Maul – Shadow Lord. Describing it as a blend of pulpy noir, detective police procedural, and gangster picture, he highlighted the incorporation of classic and modern cinematic influences, including The Dark Knight, Heat, The Untouchables, and The Godfather.

The series, co-created by Dave Filoni and Michnovetz, premiered its first season on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, featuring 10 episodes released in pairs until May 4, 2026. The executive producers, along with Carrie Beck, Athena Yvette Portillo, Brad Rau, and Josh Rimes, worked on bringing the thrilling and action-packed roller coaster ride to fans, leaving them on the edge of their seats with each episode.

Returning as the voice of Maul is Sam Witwer, joined by a talented supporting voice cast including David W. Collins, Dennis Haybert, Gideon Adlon, Richard Ayoade, Vanessa Marshall, Wagner Moura, Chris Diamantopoulos, Charlie Bushnell, A.J. LoCascio, and Steve Blum. The series promises to deliver an exciting narrative that combines elements from iconic films to captivate audiences.
