Cambodia Activates Mandatory Conciliation Mechanism Under UN Convention on the Law of the Sea

Cambodia has decided to activate a mandatory conciliation mechanism under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This move is not linked to any border conflicts with Cambodia but is part of a policy decision. Cambodia's Foreign Minister expressed disappointment over the termination of the agreement and stated that Cambodia is committed to resolving maritime disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law. Despite the signing of Memorandum of Understanding 44, little progress has been made due to political instability, disputes, and opposition from Thai nationalists. Thailand plans to negotiate directly with Cambodia on maritime boundary demarcation using Unclos as a reference. Thailand has historically avoided international mechanisms for settling border disputes with Cambodia, preferring bilateral negotiations.
