Expansion Underway: Tuscaloosa National Airport Embarks on $22 Million Runway Extension Project

City leaders gathered at Tuscaloosa National Airport to mark the beginning of a $22 million project to extend the runway. The project, mostly funded by the federal government, will involve raising the land beyond the existing runway, leveling it, and adding 1,100 feet of new asphalt to extend the runway to 7,600 feet. Mayor Walt Maddox, Councilman Joe Eatmon, and Airport Director Jeff Powell expressed their excitement about the economic development potential of the airport and the job opportunities it could create for the community. The project, expected to be completed in July 2027, will also include lighting and electrical upgrades to enhance safety and accommodate future growth.
