Harbour Cities-Global Stages: Celebrating Liverpool and Hamburg's Partnership Through The Beatles and Beyond

The exhibition "Harbour Cities-Global Stages" celebrates Liverpool City Region's partnership with Hamburg's annual port festival, Hafengebustag. It features 48 panels across six pillars and will be displayed at Hamburg's City Hall from May 7-25, expected to be viewed by over 10,000 people.

The exhibition highlights The Beatles' connection to Hamburg, showcasing historic artifacts like the only Lennon and McCartney letter, photos from their early gigs, and insights into their rise to stardom. It coincides with the 60th anniversary of The Beatles' final European concert in Hamburg in 1966.

The exhibition explores the shared love of sport, particularly football, between Hamburg and Liverpool, focusing on Kevin Keegan's career. It also showcases the current academic, cultural, and economic landscapes of both regions.

A significant aspect of the exhibition is the influence of Hamburg on The Beatles' sound and image from 1960-62, setting the stage for their global success. The timing aligns with the filming of a TV series called "Hamburg Days," based on Klaus Voorman's memoirs, a friend of The Beatles.

Rare letters and photographs from The Beatles' time in Hamburg, including their first night in 1960, illustrate their journey from a skiffle group to a rock'n'roll sensation. The exhibition also features pivotal moments like George's letter about their first record contract.

Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, in collaboration with the Hamburg Senate, plans to bring the exhibition back to the region this summer. A Mayoral Joint Declaration of Intent will be signed to promote economic and maritime cooperation, public sector innovation, culture, tourism, education, and research.

The visit will include business seminars, a festival showcasing Liverpool's cultural institutions and musical talent, and an agreement on AI development collaboration between Hamburg and Liverpool City Region. Key organizations in the delegation include STFC Hartree Centre, University of Liverpool, logistics company Log Chain, and AI businesses like Sum Vivas Ltd.

The partnership between Hamburg and Liverpool, rooted in their maritime traditions and shared connection through The Beatles, highlights their diverse and innovative identities. The collaboration aims to strengthen ties and promote mutual growth between the two cities.
