Israeli Community of Lisbon Raises Concerns Over Kanye West's Algarve Concert

The Israeli Community of Lisbon (CIL) has raised concerns about Kanye West's upcoming concert in the Algarve, citing the use of public funds and facilities for the event. CIL has urged the Faro and Loulé city councils and the national government to refrain from supporting the show, scheduled to be held at the Algarve Stadium on 7 August. David Botelho, the president of CIL, criticized the normalization of providing resources to individuals with anti-Semitic views, expressing shock at the allocation of public resources for the concert. The Israeli Community of Lisbon views this as an unacceptable normalization of hate speech.

Despite facing cancellations in other European countries due to concerns about anti-Semitic remarks, Kanye West's concert in Portugal remains unaffected for now. The American rapper, also known as Ye, has faced backlash for his history of making anti-Semitic and racist comments, resulting in lost contracts and endorsements. While countries like France, Poland, and Switzerland have either postponed or cancelled his concerts, the UK has denied him a visa. Portugal is part of Kanye West's European tour, but the Israeli Community of Lisbon hopes for a response from the concerned municipalities regarding their request to not support the event.

The Israeli Community of Lisbon has emphasized the need to address the issue of hate speech and anti-Semitism, highlighting Kanye West's controversial statements that include denial of the Holocaust and praise for Hitler and Nazism. Despite the concerns raised by CIL, the fate of Kanye West's concert in Portugal remains uncertain. The community continues to advocate for a response from the authorities to address the normalization of hate speech and anti-Semitic attitudes in public spaces.
