Train Derailment in Monroe County: Recovery Efforts Underway

A train derailed in Monroe County early Wednesday morning, as reported by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred at 3 a.m. in Juliette when a tractor-trailer collided with the train at the crossing of Highway 83 at Berner Loop. Fortunately, the driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries. The train continued until the Juliette Road crossing, where the train cars derailed. Both Highway 82 and Juliette Road are closed for the day due to the accident. The recovery process is expected to be complex as a train car is currently positioned on top of a 500-gallon propane tank. Norfolk Southern crews are on-site, and power has been shut down in the vicinity of the Whistle Stop Cafe to address the situation. Additional support from Norfolk Southern Specialty teams is en route to assist with the recovery efforts.
