Dead in the Kitchen: A Culinary Celebration with Gabi Moskowitz at Piknik Town Market

A cookbook event inspired by the improvisational spirit of the Grateful Dead is scheduled to take place on May 16 in Guerneville. Food writer Gabi Moskowitz will host a signing and tasting for Dead in the Kitchen: The Official Grateful Dead Cookbook at Piknik Town Market. The event will be a unique celebration, blending elements of a dinner party and a concert, featuring dishes from the book, live music, and a crowd immersed in the Grateful Dead culture. The cookbook, designed with iconic Dead imagery, reimagines the traditional cookbook format as a live performance, mirroring the flow of a Dead show from start to finish.

Moskowitz's cookbook focuses on vegetarian and vegan food traditions that were popular among Deadheads, such as grilled cheese sandwiches, falafel, and kind veggie burritos. The recipes in the book draw inspiration from the 1970s counterculture kitchen, emphasizing whole grains, plant-based cooking, and communal dining. Moskowitz's culinary journey was influenced by her upbringing in Santa Rosa and her exposure to the music and ethos of the Grateful Dead, particularly Jerry Garcia's emphasis on preparation and improvisation.

The structure of the cookbook reflects Moskowitz's approach to cooking, combining strong technique with room for creativity and variation. Unable to use song titles due to licensing restrictions, the book is organized as an experiential arc, following the stages of a live show. Longtime Dead archivist David Lemieux praised the project for its practicality and personal touch, highlighting the connection between food and the touring culture of Dead fans. The cookbook also features a foreword by Mollie Katzen, a pioneer in the vegetarian movement with her Moosewood Cookbook.

Some recipes in the book carry symbolic meanings, such as a carrot cake inspired by the band's immersive live experiences. Moskowitz's garlicky grilled cheese recipe offers three variations to cater to different tastes and preferences. The cookbook was crafted with a soundtrack of Grateful Dead albums playing in the background, infusing the recipes with the band's musical spirit. The upcoming event in Guerneville aims to recreate the communal atmosphere of Dead concerts, inviting guests to enjoy good food, music, and company in a small-town setting.
