NBC Greenlights Two New Comedy Pilots: 'Sunset P.I.' and 'Newlyweds

NBC has greenlit two new comedy pilots, one featuring Jake Johnson as a detective in "Sunset P.I." and another rom-com starring Jamie Lee Curtis called "Newlyweds." Unfortunately, the therapist comedy starring Jane Lynch and Katey Segal did not move forward. "Sunset P.I." follows Johnson as a private investigator in Los Angeles, with Jane Levy, Langston Kerman, Mary Shalaby, and Keith David also in the cast. The show is written by Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici and directed by Akiva Schaffer.

On the other hand, "Newlyweds" is a love story about a free-spirited woman and a professor who marry impulsively after a whirlwind courtship. The series stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, with Jamie Lee Curtis making recurring appearances. Gail Lerner executive produces the show alongside Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, Curtis, Scott Schwartz, and Lionsgate Television. Pam Fryman directed the pilot for "Newlyweds."

Both comedy projects are produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. NBC Entertainment and Peacock's scripted and television studios chairman, Pearlena Igbokwe, praised the exceptional pilot slate developed by the creative teams led by Lisa Katz and Erin Underhill. The network took big swings with these projects, aiming for breakthrough shows.

Unfortunately, an untitled comedy project written by Kari Lizer did not progress past the pilot stage. The show, loosely inspired by real-life therapists and sociologists Pepper Schwartz and Janet Lever, featured Katey Segal and Jane Lynch as opposites who work best together. NBC also announced series pickups for two drama pilots, "Line of Fire" and a reboot of "The Rockford Files" starring David Boreanaz.
