Respecting The Beatles' Legacy: New Code of Conduct for Tour Guides and Visitors in Liverpool

A new code of conduct has been established for tour guides and visitors to Beatles landmarks in Liverpool. The code aims to protect the residents living near popular sites such as Sir Paul McCartney's childhood home in Allerton, Strawberry Field, Penny Lane, and George Harrison's birthplace in Wavertree. The code, developed by The Beatles Legacy Group, has been endorsed by local tour guides, The Beatles Story museum, and the Liverpool Business Improvement District. It emphasizes the importance of respectful behavior from visitors while capturing memories and taking photos.

The code of conduct outlines specific guidelines for visiting certain locations, such as limiting the capacity of vehicles to 16 when visiting McCartney's former home in Forthlin Road and restricting vehicle access to Arnold Grove in Wavertree, where George Harrison was born. Tour guides are encouraged to minimize noise and disruption, turn off their engines, and ensure that tourists do not disturb residents by peering through windows or knocking on doors. Visiting hours are recommended between 09:30 and 18:00 during British Summer Time and until 16:00 in Greenwich Mean Time.

In response to the increasing number of visitors and tours in the area, a blue plaque was installed in Arnold Grove in Wavertree in 2024. Tour guide Jackie Spencer highlighted the need for better management of access to narrow streets due to the influx of tourists. The Beatles Legacy Group, led by Peter Hooton, initiated discussions with various tour guides to establish guidelines for respectful behavior during tours in residential areas. Paul Beesley, chairman of The Liverpool City Region Tourist Guides Association, emphasized the importance of treating residents with respect and obtaining their consent when conducting tours near The Beatles' former homes.
