The Democratic candidate, Bakersfield Vice Mayor Manpreet Kaur, and the Republican candidate, Guillermo Gonzalez, have confirmed their participation in the debate. However, the incumbent Senator Melissa Hurtado has declined the invitation and will not be part of the debate. Kaur, currently serving as the Vice Mayor of Bakersfield, is running for state office for the first time after being elected to the Bakersfield City Council in 2022. Gonzalez, a Bakersfield native and business owner, has previously worked for Rep. David Valadao. Hurtado, who was first elected to the California Senate in 2018, narrowly won reelection in 2022.
California's 16th Senate District encompasses parts of Kern, Kings, and Tulare counties. The debate will be moderated by Vincent Demonte from 17 News and Katherine Phillips from KSEE24.
