These soulless cyborgs operate as a collective consciousness, traveling through the galaxy in massive cubic ships, assimilating individuals and technology without malice but with unstoppable power. Their catchphrase, "Resistance is futile," has become iconic in the "Star Trek" universe. Introduced in the 1989 episode "Q Who" of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the Borg posed a formidable threat to the USS Enterprise-D crew, showcasing their ability to adapt to any attack and their eerie biomechanical appearance inspired by H.R. Giger's artwork.
The Borg's design in "Star Trek: First Contact" underwent a transformation, with more form-fitting metal panels resembling armor and a more organic look to their facial implants. The makeup and costume designs were crafted by Michael Westmore and Deborah Everton, respectively, with a passing consultation with H.R. Giger, who ultimately did not contribute to the film. Giger's eccentric nature and preference for creative freedom may have deterred him from involvement in a studio-driven project like a "Star Trek" sequel, especially under the close supervision of executive producer Rick Berman.
