Highlights from the 13th Platino Xcaret Awards: Celebrating Excellence in Ibero-American Cinema

The annual Ibero-American awards event Premios Platino, known as the Platinos Xcaret, celebrated its latest edition in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Kleber Mendonça’s “The Secret Agent” emerged as the big winner, securing accolades for best feature, director, screenplay, and actor (Wagner Moura). The event also saw Spain’s “Sundays” (“Los Domingos”) winning the audience prize. Enrique Cerezo, president of Egeda, highlighted the growing production in Latin American countries and honored Argentina’s Guillermo Francella with the Platino Honorary Award.
The technical awards were a showdown between Spain and Argentina, with Spain’s “Sirât” by Oliver Laxe clinching awards in special effects, cinematography, and sound. On the TV front, Argentina’s “The Eternaut” and Spain’s “Anatomy of a Moment” were in contention. “The Eternaut” dominated with seven awards, including best series and actor for Ricard Darin. Dolores Fonzi received recognition for her role in “Belén” and her contribution to Film & Education in Values.
Brazil also made its mark with the series “Scars of Beauty,” created by Raphael Montes. The event was marred by a political dispute between Mexican and Spanish officials, leading to tensions before the awards ceremony. Despite the controversy, the gala celebrated the Ibero-American film industry and honored outstanding talent in the region.
