Capturing Humanity: The Story of Misan Harriman in 'Shoot the People

Watermelon Pictures has unveiled the trailer for "Shoot the People," a documentary by Andy Mundy-Castle focusing on photographer and activist Misan Harriman. The film captures Harriman's documentation of significant protest movements, including Black Lives Matter demonstrations and Free Palestine marches. Through Harriman's powerful black-and-white photographs and behind-the-scenes footage, the trailer showcases his commitment to capturing the human condition with purpose.
Misan Harriman, known for being the first Black photographer to shoot a cover for British Vogue, gained international recognition for his poignant images from the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. His work extends beyond activism to include portraits of notable figures like Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, and Cate Blanchett. Director Andy Mundy-Castle describes the documentary as a reflection on perspective, power, and humanity, aiming to address injustice rather than passively observe it.
"Shoot the People" premiered at SXSW and was featured at DOC NYC, with producer Wyn Baptiste receiving the breakthrough producer award at the British Independent Film Awards. Watermelon Pictures acquired the film for distribution in the U.S. and U.K., planning a theatrical release in the U.S. starting at New York's Angelika Film Center on Juneteenth. The film will then expand to other cities like Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, and more before a nationwide release on July 3. In the U.K. and Ireland, the film will hit cinemas on July 10, coinciding with Emancipation Day celebrations on August 1.
