NBC Sports Secures Exclusive NFL Game for Peacock Streaming: Strategic Move for Penultimate Weekend

NBC Sports has secured an extra regular-season NFL game to be streamed exclusively on Peacock, adding to its lineup outside of the Sunday Night Football package. The game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 2, with an exclusive Peacock game to follow that night and Sunday Night Football the next evening. NBCUniversal aims to capitalize on the final weekend of the season, hoping for an exciting finish similar to last season's Ravens-Steelers showdown.

The announcement of the acquisition was made during the NBC upfront, coinciding with Fox's announcement of acquiring rights to two additional regular-season games. Negotiations between NBCU and other NFL rights holders and the league are ongoing, as the NFL plans to opt out of existing deals before 2033. Renewing with the NFL is expected to come at a significant cost for media companies, with reports suggesting Paramount Skydance, CBS's parent company, may face an extra expense of $1 billion.

The last time NBCU added a game was in 2024, but that was a playoff game streamed on Peacock. The Week 17 transaction for the upcoming season is a more cost-effective move compared to the playoff game. NBC Sports President Rick Cordella expressed excitement about the additional game, highlighting the strategic importance of having three exclusive national NFL games on the penultimate weekend of the season.

With the acquisition, NBC Sports will broadcast a total of 26 NFL games in the 2026 season, starting with the NFL Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, August 6. This includes 22 regular-season games and three playoff games. The move underscores NBC's commitment to delivering premium NFL content across its platforms, benefiting its owned-stations, affiliates, and partners.
