Nia DaCosta to Direct 'Sex Criminals' Series Pilot and Second Episode for Prime Video

Nia DaCosta, known for her work on the critically acclaimed film "Hedda," has been selected to direct the pilot and second episode of the upcoming series "Sex Criminals" on Prime Video. The series is based on the Image Comics title and is a collaboration between Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani, Tze Chun, LuckyChap, and Amazon MGM Studios. DaCosta will also serve as an executive producer for the show, which was announced during Amazon's Upfront presentation in New York City.
The eight-episode series stars Imogen Poots and John Reynolds and follows the story of Suze, a girl with a unique ability to stop time when she has sex. When she meets Jon, who shares the same gift, they decide to use their abilities to rob banks. Nanjiani, Gordon, and Chun are the showrunners and executive producers of the series, which is based on the comic book created by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky in 2013.
Gordon, Nanjiani, and Dani Melia will executive produce the series through Winter Coat Films, along with Chun, Dani Gorin for LuckyChap, and Fraction and Zdarsky. Louie Hayes from LuckyChap is a producer on the show. DaCosta has an impressive track record, having directed projects like "Hedda," "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," and "Candyman." She is also set to direct "The Marvels," making her the first Black woman to helm a Marvel Studios feature film. DaCosta has received recognition for her work, including winning the Nora Ephron Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival for her debut feature "Little Woods."
