Unleashing Satisfaction: The Story Behind the Rolling Stones' Iconic Hit

In the early morning of May 7, 1965, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones woke up with a melody in his head. He recorded a simple eight-note riff and mumbled the line, “I can’t get no satisfaction,” before falling back asleep. The next morning, he discovered the recording on his cassette tape and was surprised by what he had created.

Initially unsure of the idea, Richards worried he had unintentionally copied the melody from another song. Mick Jagger, however, was inspired by the riff and quickly wrote the rest of the lyrics. The band attempted to record the song in Chicago and later in Los Angeles, where it finally took shape.

In Los Angeles, the band experimented with a Gibson Maestro Fuzz-Tone pedal, giving the song its distinctive sound. Released in the U.S. on June 6, 1965, “Satisfaction” became the Stones’ first number-one hit in America and remains a classic rock anthem.

The song's success solidified the Rolling Stones' place in music history, and it continues to be celebrated as one of the greatest songs of all time.
