Alongside his childhood friend Steve Cropper, Dunn started his musical career with The Royal Spades, which eventually led to the formation of the Mar-Keys and a successful partnership with Stax Records.

Joining forces with Booker T. Jones and Al Jackson Jr., Dunn and Cropper became integral parts of the Memphis soul sound of the 1960s and '70s.
