Love Scam: Brazilian Pensioner Duped by Fake James Blunt Relationship
A Brazilian pensioner fell victim to an online scam where she believed she was in a romantic relationship with British singer James Blunt, losing £7,500 in the process. The pensioner, residing in Sao Joao da Boa Vista, was contacted by a fake profile claiming to be James Blunt after commenting on a live broadcast by the real singer. The scammer used artificial intelligence to send photos and videos to convince the victim of the authenticity of their relationship. The pensioner, who was vulnerable due to personal losses, began transferring money to the scammer, believing she was helping the singer she loved. The scam unraveled when the fake James Blunt claimed to be in Brazil, prompting the victim to realize the real singer was touring Europe at the time. Despite blocking the scammer and filing a police report, the victim still faces emotional distress and a significant financial loss of around £7,500.
