Promised Spaces: Exploring Luxury Homes and Inequality in Cambodia Through Film

Social inequality is a prevalent global issue that many are familiar with. Ivan Marković, a director and cinematographer from Belgrade, Serbia, now residing in Berlin, delves into the world of luxury homes and inequality in Cambodia in his debut fiction feature film, Promised Spaces. The film, a contemplative hybrid documentary-fiction production, premieres at the Cannes Film Festival's ACID sidebar, showcasing urban speculation and the construction of luxury homes in Cambodia, as well as the concept of home. The cast includes Vollak Kong, Chea Loch, Vita Vong, Lyer Von, Theara Or, and Kanitha Tith. Ivan Marković wrote, directed, and edited the film, with sound design by Luka Barajević, and it was produced by Bocalupo Films in collaboration with Fiskultura Films, Big Time Production, and Anti-Archive, with Luminalia handling international sales.

The film follows Sokun, who leaves his crowded construction dormitory due to the heat and joins a community of fellow workers living in an unfinished high-rise. Meanwhile, Seda, the first tenant of a luxury home in a gated complex, feels trapped in the vast surroundings. Promised Spaces captures the essence of a ghost town emerging in the Cambodian countryside, with gated communities, new buildings, suspended construction sites, and recent ruins shaping a dynamic space inhabited by various individuals. The film explores the intersection of urban and political landscapes, showcasing how class relations manifest in concrete forms.

Marković's inspiration for Promised Spaces stems from the exploration of how architecture reflects social segregation, isolating individuals across different social strata. By blending fiction with real locations and non-actors, the film portrays the evolving urban landscapes of Cambodia, highlighting the impact of speculative urban growth on identities, communities, and the notion of home. An exclusive trailer for the film offers a glimpse into the visually captivating world of Cambodia, showcasing the transformation of a former fishing village into a modern urban environment. Experience the cinematic visuals, sounds, and atmosphere of Promised Spaces as it immerses you in a world of luxury homes and social inequality in Cambodia.
