Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, has been serving a life sentence in ADX Florence prison for almost a decade. The attention on El Chapo has also brought focus to the women in his life, including Lucero Guadalupe Sánchez López, a former local lawmaker and his ex-partner. In an interview, Sánchez shared her experiences with Guzmán, revealing how she met him at a young age and was involved in his world of drug trafficking. She recounted feeling trapped in their relationship and eventually discovering surveillance devices that led to their separation.
Sánchez described a dramatic escape attempt with Guzmán through a tunnel connected to Culiacán's sewer system during a military operation. After Guzmán's capture, she was tricked into visiting him in prison, which resulted in a scandal when her image was leaked to the media. Sánchez believes she was used as a distraction while Guzmán planned his escape through a tunnel from his cell.
Regarding the recent letters attributed to El Chapo, Sánchez, who is familiar with his handwriting, stated that the cursive writing in the letters does not match his. She emphasized her long-standing relationship with Guzmán and her involvement in his trial as a cooperating witness. Sánchez has been living in the United States for the past nine years after serving as a local deputy in Sinaloa.
