RNLI Rescues Surfer at Belhaven Beach: A Lesson in Water Safety and Emergency Response

A surfer at Belhaven Beach in East Lothian was rescued by RNLI crews after being swept away by three-meter-high waves. The incident occurred on Friday, May 15, around 10:30 am. The experienced surfer managed to reach the shore at Winterfield Golf Club after paddling for 40 minutes. Sam Christopherson, a senior instructor at Coast to Coast Surf School, emphasized the importance of being cautious of rip currents in the sea, advising surfers to paddle sideways to escape the current and signal for help if needed.

The surfer who was caught in the rip currents acted appropriately by staying calm and signaling for help. Despite being far out at sea, the surfer eventually made it back to shore independently. The RNLI played a crucial role in assisting the surfer in challenging conditions. Dunbar RNLI D class helm Adrian Lavery commended the surf school's safety message and highlighted the importance of prompt action in water emergencies. Coastguard teams from Dunbar and North Berwick also responded to the incident.

In case of witnessing someone in distress in the water, it is essential to call 999 and request assistance from the Coastguard. The collaboration between the RNLI, Coastguard, and surf school underscores the significance of water safety awareness and prompt response to emergencies.
