Byron Allen Acquires Majority Stake in BuzzFeed: A Game-Changer for Media Empire Expansion

Byron Allen has made a significant addition to his media empire by acquiring a majority stake in BuzzFeed for $120 million. This deal comes as he gears up to take over CBS’s late-night lineup. Allen will now serve as the new CEO of BuzzFeed, replacing founder Jonah Peretti. The agreement includes an upfront payment of $20 million and a $100 million promissory note due in five years.

BuzzFeed revealed the sale alongside quarterly earnings that showed a nearly 20 percent decline in advertising revenue and losses amounting to $15.1 million. This acquisition is part of Allen’s strategy to expand his media holdings, which already include The Weather Channel, TheGrio, syndicated television programming, and local TV stations across the country. Allen recently made headlines for securing CBS’s 11:35 p.m. slot with his show Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen.

Peretti expressed confidence in Allen’s ability to lead BuzzFeed into the future, highlighting his track record as a successful media entrepreneur. Allen, on the other hand, emphasized his vision to transform BuzzFeed into a multi-platform entertainment hub, focusing on free-streaming video, audio, and user-generated content. He aims to position BuzzFeed as a premier free video streaming service, competing with platforms like YouTube.

The sale marks a new chapter for BuzzFeed, which has experienced both highs and lows in its journey. Previously, the company turned down a reported $650 million acquisition offer during the peak of the digital media boom. With Allen at the helm, BuzzFeed is poised to evolve beyond its traditional content offerings and explore new avenues in the digital entertainment landscape.
