Samson Films: A Trailblazer in Independent Irish Cinema

Samson Films, led by David Collins, stands out as the sole Irish production company with a film featured in the Cannes 2026 lineup, the Critics’ Week documentary Tin Castle. Collins, known for his instinct-driven approach to project selection, was immediately drawn to the idea of documenting a family in Ireland living in a dilapidated trailer. The decision to produce Tin Castle was made swiftly, without much consideration for financial logistics or market potential. Collins, an independent producer, values gut instinct over market trends, a philosophy deeply ingrained in Samson Films' work ethic.

The production of Tin Castle was initially self-financed by Samson Films, with support from Screen Ireland and the CNC secured over the course of three years. Films Boutique has taken on the sales rights for the documentary. Samson Films' diverse slate includes projects like Loya, a deforestation drama by Turkish-Canadian filmmaker Sibel Güvenç, and upcoming features by filmmakers from various backgrounds. The company recently completed two Dublin premieres and continues to expand its portfolio with compelling storytelling.

Established in 1984, Samson Films, currently comprising a team of seven, marks a significant milestone with Tin Castle being its first Cannes official selection. Collins emphasizes the importance of maintaining momentum in the independent production landscape, highlighting the value of quick decision-making and efficient fund allocation. For Collins, the key to a successful career lies in staying agile and responsive to the ever-evolving industry landscape.
