2028 Tour de France Grand Départ: Will Luxembourg or Reims Host the Prestigious Event?

The Tour de France is a prestigious cycling event that attracts global attention. After starting in Barcelona in 2026 and Edinburgh in 2027, the question now is whether the 2028 edition will kick off from Luxembourg or Reims. Both cities are vying to host the Grand Départ of the Tour, which is considered the third-largest sporting event in the world.

Reims and the Grand Est region officially submitted their bid to host the 2028 Tour de France Grand Départ at the end of December 2025. On the other hand, Luxembourg has been contemplating the idea for years and in February 2025, PM Luc Frieden authorized the Minister for Sport to submit Luxembourg's bid to the Tour de France organizer, Amaury Sport Organisation. A visit by Christian Prudhomme, the cycling director at Amaury Sport Organisation, to La Coque in Luxembourg in October 2025 further solidified Luxembourg's bid.

Luxembourg's bid for hosting the Tour de France in 2028 is significant due to the historical milestones that could be celebrated during the Grand Départ. The year 2028 marks 100 years since Nicolas Frantz's second Tour de France victory and 70 years since Charly Gaul's triumph, adding a special touch to the event.

A decision on whether Luxembourg or Reims will host the Grand Départ of the 2028 Tour de France is expected to be announced soon. According to reports, Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme is scheduled to hold a major press conference in Reims on Monday, 18 May, where the announcement may be made. While Luxembourg's hopes are not entirely ruled out, Reims is believed to be in a favorable position to secure the hosting rights for the prestigious event. Stay tuned for the official announcement to find out where the 2028 Tour de France will begin its journey.
